Description

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a philosophical simulator with plotless storytelling, experimental adversarial mechanics, and unforgiving gameplay.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy takes place in a fictional universe where the hero imprisoned in a cook’s cauldron will have to overcome hundreds of obstacles and reach the end, not the story, but his own torment. There is no need to start the passage with the training program at the training ground or with short plot excerpts. You have to set records and avoid traps that appear on the way immediately, and in all seriousness!

Features Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

The unique style turns Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy into an avant-garde work of art: on the way you will meet upside-down houses, the Statue of Liberty split into pieces, and even the dismantled Eiffel Tower;
The gameplay is intense and partly meditative: you don’t have to move forward extremely fast. No one bothers to carefully consider each new movement;

The hammer is a faithful assistant to every player in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy: and therefore it is important to master all the mechanics and actions at once (how to push, cling, protect from falls);
Getting to the finish credits is not an easy task. And not those who have dexterous fingers will win, but those who stoically approach any challenge.

Progress and storytelling

The usual plot twists and turns, dialogues or missions in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy are not provided: the developers do not even set the direction for the next step. An unknown silent hero only appears on the screen (later, from the narrator’s monologue, it will become known that he is forced to move in a bowler hat and wield the hammer of Diogenes), and a strange universe appears around, composed of disparate parts, objects and things. Then you have to master the world, cling to the scenery, go up and periodically fall down.

Progress in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is immediately imperceptible – here the hero seems to have moved a hundred meters ahead relative to the starting location, but if you make a mistake, and Diogenes will roll head over heels back, and recent achievements will sink into oblivion. The whole gameplay is built on ups and downs. Therefore, the developers recommend that you immediately collect all the emotional stability inside and relax, otherwise, after half an hour, the nerves will begin to resemble ropes stretched to the limit, ready to break out of the blue.

Mechanics, difficulty and atmosphere

The developers at Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy exploit just a couple of gameplay concepts. It’s about a special hammer that pushes the protagonist up, clinging to objects around. The banal mechanics turns into a unique test within 10 minutes – you have to adapt to the world, choosing the exact angle for each action and adjusting the force of the impact.

Cope with the assigned task will not work right away: the hammer is too sensitive (even on computers with a mouse), and the slightest miscalculations are fatal. The error will not lead to the Game Over splash, but will punish it differently – by falling down, but not to the control point, but to where the path began from. And so every time – miscalculation and fall. A new takeoff and back to the already familiar scenery.

But the atmosphere in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is rather cheerful: the offscreen voice breaks off jokes, offers to look at the next fall from a new angle and in every possible way encourages after a new mistake. But, there are hardly those who will appreciate the talkative storyteller as cheerful, when there are hundreds of unmatched trials ahead …
