Don’t Starve – in our time, when the number of games offered by developers has long gone beyond all reasonable limits, players somehow have to choose in this vast sea of ​​products. And who is the winner? Of course, those who followed the most non-standard path and created something unlike other toys, and even better, if even the genre is difficult to define.

Don’t Starve, perhaps, is not in the last place in the list of such games.

The plot of the game is simple: we have a little man (first one, later – a number of unique characters to choose from), whom evil forces threw into a harsh and unfriendly forest, and the main task is not to throw away his hooves. The place is really difficult! Dangers from all directions, and not always from those from which you expected. Sit still? Also not an option: our hero will soon want to eat, if you do not make a fire, then he risks freezing, and so on. Why, in Don’t Starve, he may even develop psychological problems from a shock situation! In short, everything is like in real life.

And the most vital thing in the game is that it is almost impossible to survive in it. No matter how hard you try, no matter how you delay the inevitable, death will still occur with a probability of 99%, and all we can do is to postpone it for as long as possible. We do not take into account the one remaining percentage – yes, it is, and in theory the game can end in victory. But this is such an illusory and rare chance that it does not even count as the main goal of the game – just a bonus for the very, very, most diligent.

The number of retries is also limited. Here you are not here, as the game Don’t Starve would tell us, substituting “here” for the name of any popular game where you can repeat attempts an infinite number of times. Each of the available characters has two lives: the harsh forest forgives only one mistake, and thanks for that. Going through the game from the beginning, having lost all saved progress, is a dubious pleasure. So you have to experiment very carefully, so as not to run into something unpleasant.

In all this, there is some kind of philosophical subtext: they say, everything around is mortal, nothing is eternal, in short, memento more. But on the other hand, the philosophy of the game is very simple: survive. Do whatever is necessary. Heroes are not up to lyrics and abstract topics. They will not get to this level of Maslow’s pyramid before they deal with the previous ones, which include a huge number of natural needs, which in everyday life we ​​do not even think about, taking it for granted. In other words, the real moral of Don’t Starve is: value life. It tends to end.
