Terraria – adventures of free diggers

Terraria is an imaginative, plotless adventure sandbox with platforming elements based on a procedurally generated universe with unlimited freedom of action.

The developers literally throw the protagonist into an unknown virtual plane, give out a pickaxe yellowed from old age and, without naming goals, offer to survive by fighting enemies that come across on the way, collecting resources and looking into dungeons covered with corruption and dangerous knowledge keepers.

Formally, the ideas of Terraria have something in common with the Minecraft series, but the “similarity” disappears after 10-15 minutes, when the sandbox throws up non-standard tests (a vivid example of this is experimental battles with bosses located on the edge of hell, high above the ground or at the foot of the castle), allows you to place chairs and candelabra in virtual homes and invites you to meet NPCs, albeit not very talkative ones.

And most importantly, in Terraria there is a kind of subtle story that opens up unexpected perspectives and new challenges.

Terraria and the first steps in delirium

The sandbox begins on iOS, Android and Windows Phone mobile platforms, as well as on MacOS and Windows computer operating systems in the same way – the developers offer to think over the appearance of the character (initially they allow you to choose a hairstyle, torso and legs, face and color of each parameter: for those who are used to trust the tastes of random generation, a separate button is provided, where each element of the new hero is selected randomly), and then set up a still unknown world.

Terraria

Of the available parameters – size (from small – to one that cannot be bypassed for a whole century), complexity (Softcore without loss of property after death and Hardcore, where coins and some gizmos fall out), and network cooperation (if you want to “make friends” with virtual partners, you can not do without activating such a condition and choosing a password).

Immediately after preparation, the character instantly teleports to a new universe in worn pants with a rusty pickaxe and a modest reference book, from which one does not even learn about the method of mining. And this is the whole Terraria. Here you can’t find tips, advice and recommendations, you will have to reach some actions either by the mind, or by trial and error, which often end in death.

A world where secrets lurk

After the protagonist survives a dozen dangerous nights and goes underground a hundred times, the recipe for the rest of the actions will turn into a routine: you will have to forever collect resources, build houses, fight, gain experience and grow riches.

Terraria

It would seem that biomes (deserts, steppes, oceans) have been studied, resources have been collected, and home decorations have been carved from iron and wood. But that is only at first glance, it is worth dropping deep and Terraria changes beyond recognition.

Characters

If you turn the house built for the first overnight stay from a modest closet, assembled from sticks and mud, into a formidable mansion with windows, a solid roof and a basement in which it is convenient to store bottles of wine, then unknown heroes will appear on the horizon the very next night, in -firstly, they are able to tell about the events taking place around, and secondly, they are happy to trade.

In 5-10 minutes, the coins collected during the journey will turn into fishing rods and compasses, become new armor and even tools for the production of wool and impenetrable alloys.

Evolution

Where Minecraft offers boring diamond balls and spades, Terraria is in a hurry to shock with the presence of machine guns and pistols (cartridges will have to be made from improvised materials), special drills that can drill through the universe, boots that help you fly and hooks that cling to the environment.

Terraria

If such “novelties” are not enough, you can go further – organize a farm for the production of glow sticks from jellyfish, fly to the moon, collect dynamite and descend into hell, where the devil awaits in a recognizable guise. It is impossible to guess at what stage of development the sandbox will stop. Here, literally every ten minutes, new discoveries await.

How to beat Terraria?

In fact, plot tasks are not provided here, but if you study the virtual map in detail, it is quite possible to influence the events around.

First of all, by killing the “Wall of Flesh”: the boss appears when certain actions are performed in hell, and after death, it opens up access to new biomes and “corruption”, in a step-by-step mode and constantly changing the world around. Then a skeleton will appear, hiding the gifts of the dungeons, and a wyvern will descend from heaven, incinerating everything around.

Terraria

The more the sandbox is studied, the more serious the discoveries and the more surprising the results of the actions taken. And most importantly – in Terraria you can’t find a moment when it’s easy to fight, but you can win with your eyes closed. Testing here does not stop for a minute.

Rapid updates to Terraria

Many developers continuously monitor the released projects and make the updates desired by the fans. But, perhaps, only Re-Logic in their attempts to bring the sandbox to perfection go crazy. And this is not about minor and inconspicuous updates, but about patches that have changed Terraria beyond recognition three times in a row.

This is how the “Wailing Wall” appeared, damage was opened, support for mobile platforms appeared, there was a chance to gain wings and take off, fight bosses and know pain and despair due to enemies that turn the main character into dust literally with one touch. And best of all, these updates are free!
