It seems as if the authors of the Grand Theft Auto series were engaged in the development of Hotline Miami, but under “substances” and with a gigantic amount of creativity.

The protagonist of the game is an ordinary guy from a backwater called Miami, who, during his dreams, manages to see either the nooks and crannies of his own sick subconscious, or with some terrible spirits, however, their faces are always hidden behind the rubber masks of animals. With such a rich imagination, the protagonist could master any profession, but he chose the most creative one – the art of killing.

The hero of the game takes orders and goes to the “case” exclusively in a tight animal mask, just like those that were in a dream.

The whole gameplay of the Hotline Miami game looks like this: the player knocks down the door, ends the life of several more unfortunate people, knocks out the window, releases another clip, breaks the flower pot, directs the bat to the back of the enemy’s head, runs up to the guard and puts his head to the floor – catches a shot with his stomach and leaves for revival. With such a dynamic and fast gameplay, the game is permeated from start to finish. In some respects, the game reminds everyone of the well-known platformer Super Meat Boy, where one mistake can cost a whole level – you stumbled and you have to start over.

Opponents have enough of one blow or shot, but so does the main character. You don’t even need to stutter about the meaning of human life – death is everywhere here and is perceived as something commonplace. However, this is not a dystopia that leads to deep thoughts – this is a dynamic carnage, where the main goal is to arrange the most perfect and beautiful massacre, reconciling and honing every movement after many deaths and elegantly reducing the population of the earth.

The plot narration is actually very limited and consists only of short monologues of various heroes, for which the player will somehow have to play. However, there is nothing wrong with that – some details can be understood from the events taking place, others can be completed by yourself, because we have our own atmosphere here.

Pixel graphics and high dynamics of the game contribute to an interesting and fun gameplay that does not let you get bored even for a minute. And although the game is only a bunch of linear corridors, more is not required of it – in each room there will be its own watchman, stuffed to the teeth with various kinds of pistols, machine guns and shotguns, and he will fight for life and death. Because of such cases, when a shot flies from the doorway directly into the back of the protagonist, the levels have to be replayed, but this does not cause discomfort at all – it’s fun!
Playing Hotline Miami, you involuntarily get imbued with the atmosphere of various action films and retro films, with all this endless series of beautiful and merciless murders and whole combo episodes.

As you progress through Hotline Miami, you get the feeling that it is easier and easier to play, although in reality the levels change to more twisted and flowery, however, as popular wisdom said, “know your enemy”, for all the time in the game the habits and reflexes of opponents were studied to the utmost. A small variety in the gameplay are worn by some kind of bosses – characters who cannot be killed, like all other opponents, who lie down like cannon fodder. It is necessary to adjust the right moment and only then strike. Each boss has several stages – if at any of them you surrender positions and go to hell to regroup, then the level will have to start from the very beginning. Thanks to the developers, the pleasant and atmospheric soundtrack does not let you get bored and only encourages you to perform an increasingly beautiful series of murders.

Due to the addiction to the gameplay over time, the game hints at starting to make the player bored, however this does not happen due to the excellent duration, exactly handpicked by the developers of Hotline Miami. The game manages to deliver pleasure and pleasure, but does not manage to turn them into negative emotions – a very smart move.
