Video games are popular entertainment and a form of culture in our time. Every year new projects appear, the developers come up with new plot moves, improve the game mechanics and the visual component.
Games are created on the basis of literature, cinematography and imagination of authors, just like books are written, and films are shot based on the original video game. Some games have already become classics of the gaming space. We present to you a selection of games based on books.
The Witcher
The work of Andrzej Sapkowski “The Witcher” is a series of fantasy novels. The author made the first sketches of the future cycle in 1986, the last book was published in 2013. The books captured the attention of the audience with exciting actions against the backdrop of an alternative era of the Middle Ages. The protagonist is the Herald, whose mission is to kill the monsters that threaten people. Several TV series have been released based on the books, the last one is currently being released starting in 2019.
The first game of the series was released in October 2007 and immediately attracted the attention of the public. The mechanics of the game are about exploring the game world, fighting monsters and developing relationships between heroes. The player is given a choice of Herald’s lines in dialogues, which are based on the value and moral convictions of the protagonist.
The second part of the cycle “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” was released in May 2011, but this time did not cause such a resonance, which happened in May 2015 after the release of the third part – “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”.
The gameplay has been significantly changed, the graphics have become many times better, and there are fewer intersections with the original story of Herald. For a complete picture of The Witcher, it is advised to read the entire cycle of books and go through all three parts of the game of the same name. The third part of the game was nominated for a number of awards and won in the nominations “Best Story”, “Open World”, etc.
Alice in Wonderland
“Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll is familiar to everyone since childhood. Based on this little fairy tale, many films, cartoons and TV series have been shot, as well as several games have been created. In 2010, Tim Burton’s film of the same name was released and immediately became a favorite for many adults and young viewers. Tim Burton initially set a goal not to retell the original fairy tale, but to create a more complete version on its basis, which shows the experiences of Alice herself and her relationship with other fairy-tale characters and the world itself.
In the same year, the video game “Alice in Wonderland” based on the film appears, telling the story of 19-year-old Alice. The player will have to explore the wonderland together with Alice, help her in adventures, searches and battles, solve puzzles and complete quests. In the adventure, the player will meet the Hatter, the Cheshire cat, the white queen, who will help Alice solve puzzles, complete mini-games and avoid traps.
In 2000, an alternative version of Alice was released. American Mc Gee’s Alice is an action game in which the player has to control Alice and plunge headlong into a dark world of cruel wonders. The original idea and execution led the creators to success, and the game to great popularity in Europe. Russian-speaking players learned about the first part 11 years later, when the second game titled “Alice: Madness Returns” was released.
The gameplay of the second part is slightly different, in particular, the choice of weapons and elaborate combat mechanics. The player will take Alice on a cruel adventure filled with fear and despair. Original visuals, atmosphere and wonderful music create an unforgettable experience. Wonderland is dying and only Alice can save her. Of particular interest are the relationships between the characters, neither the player nor Alice herself know what to expect from the madmen.
