Cry of Fear is a dark survival simulator with a non-linear storytelling developed by Team Psykskallar based on the Half-Life engine.

The gameplay is intense – Simon Henrikson, a 19-year-old boy, fights his way through Stockholm distorted from madness, fires with monsters and, falling into madness, interacts with the characters that appear on the way. Surviving Cry of Fear is problematic: you have to correctly select equipment, monitor the indicator of vitality and even deal with puzzles, deciphering secret messages. A couple of mistakes and Simon will not get out of eternal sleep, but maybe wandering among dreams is more pleasant than facing reality?

Features of Cry of Fear

• The Universe of Cry of Fear always makes you cringe during the passage: the blame for everything is the scenery stained with blood, and the uniquely creepy opponents represented by witches, city madmen with bags on their heads and flying beds with tied madmen;
• Boss battles, jumping on crumbling cornices, searching for supplies and medicines, decoding messages – the gameplay changes almost every second, and therefore there is hardly a chance to get bored;
• There is plenty of equipment in Cry of Fear: pistols, rifles, police batons and knives – despite the variety, almost 90% of the time you have to be content with little, because the same ammunition is always lacking;
• The universe reacts to events with sounds, flashing lights and creaking floorboards: and it is almost impossible to withstand the influx of effects.

Atmosphere and modes

Developers moved the events in Cry of Fear to a fictional version of Stockholm with cramped city streets, empty panels and a blackened sky hiding the outlines of the stars and the moon. The atmosphere around is eerie: the hero is alone almost all the time, listening to the silence and moving along a pre-prepared route, periodically solving puzzles, picking up notes and reacting to the story.

Although the events are scheduled right down to the credits, Cry of Fear has the ability to partially influence the gameplay. First, by inviting allies: a cooperative passage provides for either exploring history with friends, or the opportunity to try on the uniform of the police and try to protect Stockholm. Secondly, the simulator supports content from the workshop: there are plenty of amateur cards, and there new opponents, additional challenges and a collection of unseen characters are hidden there. So why not plunge into a new nightmare, albeit in the mold of unofficial developers?

Characters, story and endings

Although the universe of Cry of Fear is centered around the life of Simon Henriksson, as you progress you will have a chance to encounter minor characters that completely influence the narrative. The suicide of Sophie, the pleas of a distraught mother, Dr. Purnell with fictitious diagnoses – almost every second you have to react to the actions of the heroes and adapt to events, choosing a personal path to freedom. Sometimes you have to fight your way through, periodically show mercy, and at some point betray your friends and trust your enemies.

The choice in Cry of Fear affects which credits will run across the screen at the last moment: in three out of five they will write about the imminent death of Simon, but with a sufficient amount of skill, there will be a chance to defend against madness and find refuge among dreams. But how long the torture will last is the question ahead!
