While Darksiders Genesis looks like games like Diablo 3 or Path of Exile, it’s a completely different game.

Darksiders Genesis Review

Things are happening in the underworld and it doesn’t take long for half of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, War and Strife, to be thrown into the main deadly battle between powerful forces in the underworld. Quite quickly, you are sent on missions to collect relics and other things that can be used to stop dire plans and maintain a balance between good and bad.

Some areas of Darksiders Genesis are too similar, and the things you end up doing change too little throughout the game. You have indoor and outdoor areas, and each level has many different collections and secrets. Some of them are not available at first because you lack the necessary skills or tools to get to the areas, so you are encouraged to complete the levels multiple times.

However, there is simply no incentive or motivation for this. The tree of abilities and progress in the game are so simple and subtle that there is little that makes you interested in the game again, especially when nothing changes. If you go back and select the previous game scene, you will be doing exactly the same things, with the same monsters, in the same places as at any other time. It’s not exciting and it gets boring quickly.

The Darksiders Genesis combat system and the upgrades you get along the way are also good in the middle of the tree. Like Strife, you keep your distance and can use two different types of ammo for your weapon. They can be changed at any time if you find other types and give different effects. For example, the ammo type fires heavier shots that can deflect more enemies. You also have active attacks that do more damage or deal multiple hits at the same time.

One funny thing is that you are free to switch between the two characters, and in the end, you can also unlock attacks that you can do when you switch.

The downside to Darksiders Genesis is that many of the boss fights are easiest to do with Strife, as the War melee just makes it take too much damage. But it’s a little fun to constantly alternate between two characters, each with their own style, strengths and weaknesses.

The abilities and talent tree are improved by killing monsters, which then emit different crystals with different bonuses. They come in three different categories and two different sizes, which correspond to different locations in the talent tree. For example, one node can be health, and if you place a health crystal there, you will receive a slightly larger bonus, since they are the same. You also upgrade crystals by collecting more to increase the bonus that comes with it. It can do more damage, provide more health, or other things that give you an edge in games.

The system isn’t bad anyway, but there isn’t much room for variety here, and while you get slightly different bonuses, there isn’t much of a difference in the Darksiders Genesis playstyle in this system. There is also little motivation to acquire new and better things as you don’t have much synergy or big things to go your own way. But on the way to the end and the final boss fight, everything works great, although I wish there was more variety and more options for customizing and refining the play style of the two heroes.

Conclusion

Darksiders Genesis is a completely mediocre, somewhat boring game. During the first few hours of the game, you have fun, but then the game variety ends, and each new mission seems familiar to you.

Various weapons and attacks are selected or bought, but there are no big differences in the style of play and attack, the combat system works, but in no way is it unique or new. The game seems to be made on autopilot, without fun or inspiration, without any creativity or desire to do something new and exciting.
