Risk of Rain 2 for Windows

The first part of Risk of Rain was released relatively long ago – in 2013. It was an uncomplicated 2D side-scrolling game where the player was given the role of a mercenary traveling across different worlds and fighting all sorts of life forms – from small to large. The player was given several classes to choose from, each of which had its own special features.

The task was simple – to destroy monsters, collect all kinds of improvements and items, pumping your character. However, there were really a great variety of these items, as well as the various effects that they bestowed, so no one passage was like another. It was possible to play both alone and in cooperative mode, which added spice, since the players needed to rationally approach the distribution of available resources, since they were all common.

Risk of Rain, although it did not make some kind of revolution in the genre, but confidently stood on its feet, having a fairly loyal fan base underneath. Therefore, the sudden appearance of the second part on the Steam store, excited many. Nobody expected the continuation after so long, but here, like a bolt from the blue – Risk of Rain 2 !

Risk of Rain 2 Review

The most important difference of the second part, which immediately catches the eye, is the transition from the 2D world to the full-fledged 3D.

However, the overall style and atmosphere are immediately felt, despite such a significant leap in quality. Risk of Rain 2 is in early access, but it’s safe to say that the game already at this stage feels like a completely finished and polished project.

Risk of Rain 2 Characters

The basic gameplay has remained unchanged, as before, the player is given several classes to choose from: Commando, Huntress, Engineer, MUL-T, Mercenary and Artisan.

• The first is the most balanced, sort of a soldier specializing in weapons. He is the very first available character to play as.
• The Huntress runs with a bow and can do a lot of damage, but has quite a few health points, which is compensated by her speed and agility, as well as the ability to dodge enemy attacks.
• MUL-T is a combat robot that can switch between multiple firing modes, adapting to the needs of the player. An excellent choice for cooperative play.
• The Engineer has a more strategic background than his colleagues. In battle, he is not so strong, but he has a lot of tools at his disposal: turrets that provide cover with fire, mines and an energy shield that protects from almost any damage for a couple of seconds.
• A mercenary is a kind of berserker who rushes at enemies with a laser sword at the ready. Incredibly agile and agile, he can quickly chop up even huge opponents.
• The Artisan is a new class that was not present in the original game. We can say that this is a kind of analogue of a magician – he deals huge damage in area, but has a low health reserve, which makes the game rather difficult for him at first, until the necessary items are collected.

Is it worth the money?

We can definitely say that Risk of Rain 2 has not changed its roots and has improved the previous system in many ways, but not without some drawbacks. The transition from 2D to 3D makes itself felt – if before the threat was always in the player’s field of vision, now you can get a fatal blow from the rear, without the ability to react in advance. Since, as in any rogue-like game, the death of a character means the end of the game, such a factor can be perceived as dishonest, independent of the player’s capabilities.

Comparing it to Bioware’s recent Anthem, it is immediately clear that the developers at Hoopo Games have put their heart and soul into this project. Does this mean that indie developers have the potential to overtake big studios and win over fans’ love more? Who knows, but the overwhelmingly positive reviews on the Steam platform already speak volumes.
