To survive, we will need to: explore a strange forest during the day, and at night crawl under the bed in the nearest refuge and pray to God for salvation from the monsters who have appeared from nowhere.

Dangers will lie in wait for you at every turn. During the day, you can get poisoned by stepping on a mushroom, or suffer from a horned deer, and at night everything around will spin in a round dance of madness and all imaginable and inconceivable creatures of darkness will climb to the surface.

The top view and graphic design can spoil the first impressions of the game, but once you plunge into it, you will plunge headlong into solving both momentary and global problems. No joke, figure out how to survive the current night or find the code for the lock in order to move further along the plot.

Darkwood has a crafting and barter system. You will operate the process of making, repairing and improving items at the workbench. You should not postpone the improvement of the workbench itself, since after upgrading it, it will be possible to craft using new blueprints. Some recipes can be crafted on the go.

Set up barricades at the entrance to the hideout, set up traps on the road, fill the generator with fuel to illuminate the shelter, and wait for guests. There is also an oven in the dwelling where you can prepare injections. Gas emanates from the furnace, which in a strange way protects you from the attacks of monsters.

Darkwood repeatedly makes you plow through the thickets of a terrible forest, not just in search of new loot, but also to get a charge of nervous tremors in your knees. Especially for this, the sound engineers have worked wonderfully well, and each subsequent nook and cranny entails more and more frightening rustles and sounds. For example, near the old church, whispering in an undertone: “Dance with me”, ghosts will circle, and nearby with the same words a man will sit and beat his head on the table.

Along the way, there will be not only distraught characters. Some people will be quite nice to talk to you and ask for help. In exchange for the service, they will assist in promotion to new locations. The deeper you move into the forest, the more the gates of hell will open, releasing more insane monsters and completely erasing the boundaries of reality. As a gift for your precocious hair, you will receive answers to questions regarding the madness going on around you and will be able to influence some events.

Darkwood is, first of all, not a typical “survivor” with crafting and resource search, but a very realistic horror movie. The forest in the game feels like a living entity that keeps you in constant tension.
