Role-playing games are one of the most interesting genres on the video game market. They involve taking on the role of a character who experiences different stories that take place in different places.
But it’s an incredibly broad genre, and to make it easier for gamers to find the best games of 2023, we’ve prepared a list of the 10 most interesting projects.
Dead Space Remake
This is an excellent remake of the original 2008 classic Dead Space. It’s been completely redesigned, it’s more enjoyable to play, the graphics are out of this world and additions have been made here and there to make the game more interesting.
A few cutscenes are slightly different, and the flow of gameplay has been changed in some places. But ultimately it’s still the same game. They didn’t spoil anything, didn’t cut anything, didn’t add anything of their own. This is a great opportunity to play through the good old Dead Space of 2008. I don’t know what this means for the development of the franchise, but I would like them to make a completely new game in the series with the same formula and atmosphere.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Another one of the most successful games of this year. Let me remind you that the order of this list does not really matter and for some it will definitely be the top game on their personal list.
Essentially, Tears of the Kingdom is Breath of the Wild, only with a super mod. It takes the world, expands it, adds a bunch of physics-based mechanics. This allows you to conduct a lot of experiments, and just suffer from all sorts of crazy things in the game. Although it seems very far from a traditional old Zelda game, in this case it doesn’t matter at all because this adventure turned out to be really cool. The game has an interesting plot, and the gameplay will sooner or later hook you and become addictive. You can be sure of this.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
This is the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn. It continues the adventure of Cal Kestis and brings a new conflict, new bad guys, an open hub zone of sorts, and tons of planets to explore.
Along with this, there are several different combat mechanics. You can fight with a heavy two-handed lightsaber, a light staff, and a blaster. This way, each of you can realize your own little fantasy about the Jedi and Star Wars.
Customize your Cal and just experience this old and fun adventure. The game has become richer than the original, it is fun to play and it has a good, sometimes dramatic plot, and also poses new challenges and questions for the heroes, the answers to which they may not really like. In any case, it’s nice to see new and good Star Wars games again.
Hogwarts Legacy
If you are looking for a great adventure in the open world of Harry Potter in which you become a Hogwarts student, choose your house, learn magic and so on, then this game is definitely for you.
This is an incredible reconstruction of Hogwarts Castle itself, its surroundings and towns. Yes, the game has its shortcomings. I think that not everyone liked the combat with a bit monotonous mechanics. But many people want to fulfill a childhood wish, and like in the film, fly on a broom, drink butterbeer, destroy bad guys with a wand, use Avada Kedavra if you are a bad wizard. In general, if you are looking for a game about Harry Potter, you definitely won’t find a better one than this.
Starfield
Bethesda is a brand new space exploration game. And believe it or not, it’s a lot like other Bethesda games, but this time it’s focused on shipbuilding, exploring different planets, and doing all the studio’s RPG stuff.
Is Starfield perfect? No. Has Starfield caused a ton of controversy? Yes. Some people love it, some people just hate it, but many people have spent a lot of time exploring the worlds, planets, enjoying the characters and building their own ships.
I will say that shipbuilding is my favorite activity in this game. Fully building, recreating your own ship from scratch, then boarding it is just pure fun. Again, I don’t think the game is perfect, but there are people who enjoy Bethesda games. This game is like a warm blanket for them. The blanket is slightly dirty, slightly holey, but nevertheless it warms them. And Starfield is just such a game.
Resident Evil 4 Remake
It is a remake of the classic Resident Evil 4, a game that changed many video games, especially the Resident Evil series. Here it opens up even more, it seems to me.
The game is simply magnificent, incredibly well recreated levels and places where we spent a lot of time. And luckily, it’s very similar to the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, which means it’s going to be fun. But the game can still be challenging and still requires a lot of care in managing your resources. Now you have a knife and you can parry blows. They also didn’t delay the expansion, which is very cool, and pretty quickly released the DLC about Ada Wong Separate Ways.
You should check out this game if you love Resident Evil. For me, this is the personal game of the year that was difficult to tear myself away from. After all, Capcom does remakes very well. I’m already waiting for the Resident Evil 5 remake, so I hope it comes out in 2024.
Final Fantasy XVI
This is a massive game and a big step for Final Fantasy to change its combat. This is not a turn-based RPG or partial turn-based combat game. Here you will have to swing your sword and kill enemies in real time.
The combat began to look more like Devil My Cry. You will also need to turn into huge creatures and fight against other monsters. This is Final Fantasy, which sometimes seems rough and gloomy, there is swearing, there are bloody scenes, partial nudity. This isn’t quite the Final Fantasy we’re used to seeing.
Is this the best Final Fantasy? I don’t know for sure, but there are great characters, incredibly well chosen music, and an overall great adventure. Everyone is different, we are different, everyone has their own favorite Final Fantasy and for some it may be Final Fantasy 16.
Spiderman 2
In third place we have Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games. This is the latest Spider-Man adventure from Insomniac. We had 2018’s Spider-Man, we had Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and now we have Spider-Man 2, which is an adventure where Peter Parker and Miles Morales battle classic Spider-Man villains like Venom and Kraven -hunter.
This is a very cool superhero sequel with a bigger plot, more bad guys. The combat here is still similar to the previous part, several new tricks have been added to swinging on the web, and a parry mechanic has been added.
This is a good Spider-Man action game with a larger world, approximately doubled in size compared to the previous part. Now you can see new locations such as Queens or Brooklyn. This is the best Spiderman game to date and probably the best Marvel superhero game. So if you love Spider-Man or love Marvel superheroes, definitely try this game.
RoboCop: Rogue City
Everyone loves RoboCop, especially older people. This is one of my favorite films as a child and the game RoboCop: Rogue City was recently released. This is the first RoboCop game in a long time to be based specifically on the classic 80s film.
The developers clearly understood what made RoboCop so special and why people have loved him for decades. They were able to capture the vibe of the classic film. Crazy first-person shooting mechanics where you smash enemy heads, throw explosive barrels and have fun in a good old classic video game. Yeah, she’s not reinventing the wheel or anything, but it’s nice to see classic actor Peter Wells back as RoboCop and doing his thing.
Alan Wake 2
This is a sequel to the original Alan Wake, which was released 13 years ago. They finally made a sequel and continued the adventure. Remedy took everything they learned from the classic games they created and gave us a truly enjoyable survival horror adventure.
The game is cinematic, atmospheric, sometimes tense and frightening, but no less addictive. There are a lot of creative things here that are unlike anything else. This is definitely one of the most unique games of 2023. Most likely, you will even be able to delve into it and understand most of the story of the plot without playing the first part.
But if anything, Alan Wake 2 will probably make you want to go back and play the original, play Control and see what the developers were really up to, because there will be a lot of references to other games, and not just games.
