MSQRD is an unpretentious entertainment platform that is functionally focused on visual transformations using 3D masks, overlay effects and add-on filters.

• Quick start. While competitors in the genre offer to study the instructions and spend hours figuring out the functionality and parameters, MSQRD has reduced the start-up preparation to a minimum. A few moments and the camera was already counting the face. Another second – and the mask selected in the menu takes on the outlines of the face. A few moments and you can click the shutter – the picture will immediately appear on the internal memory. Do you want to start everything from scratch? No problem. Again the mask is selected from the menu, click again and the result of the preparation is already gathering dust in the “Gallery”.
• Content. There is plenty of variety in MSQRD: if initially you had to interact with masks of animals (foxes and cheetahs, lions and monkeys, giraffes and pandas), then after several updates additional sections appeared, allowing you to take on the appearance of famous music performers and football players, cartoon characters and stars. And also – there was support for the “face swap” function, and an option for the use of inscriptions and logos.
• Publications. If it’s a pity to save a thousand videos and photos on the internal memory, then the developers offer to immediately start up all the work using the “Publish” button. As a result, the footage with the selected tags will immediately go to the pages of social networks Instagram and Facebook. Just a second and you can collect likes and comments!
• Individual approach. The social platform MSQRD has spawned a number of third-party services focused on preparing additional masks and filters, which can then be easily integrated into the official version of the software. If you really want to show off your design skills and creativity, no one bothers to prepare a bunch of content. Just download Masquerade Editor and you won’t be bored anymore. Superheroes, carnival masks, faces of athletes and actors – what other curious things should be part of the platform?

Versions, Access and Updates

The MSQRD program was officially developed specifically for the mobile operating systems iOS and Android: you cannot download a graphics editor for third-party platforms, but, perhaps, soon there will be partial support for the functionality through the browser. Now fans of experiments and enthusiasts have to download the Nox App Player emulator on computers to run MSQRD and prepare photos from a webcam: the scenario, albeit confusing, but quite workable.

The situation with updates is more complicated – the developers have almost completely stopped supporting authorizations not through Facebook, but with the help of Twitter, Google and Instagram (however, the question of how to enter the MSQRD application will not become open – you can generate content without first logging in), and also not trying to update the interface for new versions of Android and iOS. Because of what the design looks extremely crumpled. But masks appear often – almost every month, 5-6 new options are added, dedicated to certain holidays or moods.

Functionality and interface

The graphic editor is designed schematically – the screen provides a field for displaying images from the front or standard camera, and the quick access panel with the “Selected” masks or with the “Catalog” is unlocked, where additional elements and images are scattered over a prepared menu. Sports, animals, emotions, faces – regardless of the choice, it remains to combine the face and a special “cutout” to prepare the picture and implement the emerging concepts and plans.

If the described procedure looks complicated and confusing, it doesn’t matter – the developers tell the newbies how to use MSQRD in detail – with comments and along the way setting the interface and permissions (almost immediately you will have to provide access to the camera, Gallery and microphone).

A little more difficulty will arise with Live Streaming via Facebook. First, you will have to register (or log in), and after that, you will get acquainted with individual gestures and control elements. But, as practice suggests, even 2-3 experiments are already enough to conduct round-the-clock broadcasts without breaks and weekends.

Criticism and rating

The MSQRD application, although it allows you to virtually change with the help of a serious collection, masks, prepared images and stickers with emoticons, and even without preliminary preparation, is still far from perfect. Weird technical glitches and infrequent updates can turn content preparation into an irreparable chore with a lot of problems. Either a face is not recognized in MSQRD, then photographs and videos cannot be transferred to anyone, then the source code cannot be uploaded to social networks. It is impossible not to recall the problems with copyright holders – the same Joker mask in MSQRD has irrevocably disappeared and will no longer appear at the request of the franchise owners.
