Studio Deck13 interactive, which released the fantasy Lord of the Fallen and cybernetic Surge, presents its new project in the souls-like genre – The Surge 2 .

Review of The Surge 2

Plot

The video presentations provided by the developers make it clear that the narrative of the new game unfolds after the events shown in the original Surge. The main character will explore a certain city of Jericho and its surroundings.

The character

In the original Surge, the player was introduced to a “ready” character, a man with paralyzed legs, dreaming of walking again and arriving at the CREO Corporation plant to get a job. In The Surge 2, the player will be able to independently choose whom to play for. The developers promise a good range of customization, thereby making it possible to play as a man or a woman, choose a race, hair color, etc.

In one of the videos, the players were introduced to a girl whose task was to get into the outskirts of Jericho. Who she is and where she is from is unknown, but mercenaries are hunting for the heroine, and as a result they enter into battle with her.

The Surge 2 Gameplay

The gameplay as a whole remained unchanged, but much prettier. The physics and fluidity of the character are striking, and the battles with the enemies have become more realistic. Traditionally, equipment and weapons must be literally knocked out by dismemberment, namely, chopping off a certain limb to obtain the desired piece of armor (left or right leg, left or right arm, head and torso).

The Surge 2’s innovation is additional devices, for example, camouflage, which makes the enemy (or player) invisible, in battle you can deprive an opponent of this improvement by destroying him, but later the player will not receive a part of this device, but garbage will fall out instead.

According to the developers, it will be easier to navigate the terrain, more signs, shortcuts and detours will be added. The map will not be added, considering it superfluous in this segment of games. An example of a workaround was provided in the gameplay demo.

The player in The Surge 2 had to go through a guarded checkpoint, a frontal attack leads to defeat, it is worth noting that the guard of the checkpoint used firearms, in the previous part they were absent.

The checkpoint can be bypassed by moving through the destroyed building. On the way, there is another type of enemy – scavengers who collect armor and weapons from scrap materials and are not eager to share them. Having dealt with the threat, the hero goes to the outskirts of the checkpoint, in order to go further, you need to open the gate. The drone helps the hero to cope with this task by breaking the electronic lock.

Drone

An assistant in the form of a drone was present earlier in the game The Surge 2, but it had very modest functionality. Now the drone is becoming an integral part of the gameplay, it has options such as picking locks, covering fire, and even a built-in biosensor that allows you to see enemies through walls.

The drone can be customized by adding and removing improvements now in the same way as a character. Improvements are found or cut off from other drones.

Interaction in The Surge 2

In the series of games Dark Souls (From Software) by the founder of the soul-like genre, there is interaction between players, they leave inscriptions on the floor with warnings or signs so that you can find secret passages or prepare for an ambush.

Deck13 added a similar relationship through graffiti. Graffiti is applied to surfaces using a drone.

Weapons and equipment

The original Surge gave the player a large selection of weapons and armor for easy separation into classes: with minimal damage and fast, medium speed with acceptable damage and heavy with high damage, requiring a large supply of stamina.

In the new part of The Surge 2, the number of weapons, implants and armor is planned to be increased, some types even upgraded. The easiest way to explain this is with the example of a two-handed ax, which has high damage and low mobility: the player, having disassembled the ax, takes an ax in each hand, which have high mobility with moderate damage.

Graphics

The visual component of The Surge 2 has reached a new level – more details of the environment, light glints on exoskeletons and helmets, traced enemies, bosses previously unseen and frighteningly realistic.

The sun, trees and grass appeared in the frame, growing through the concrete and iron, heralding the fall of humanity and freeing nature.

The city is torn to pieces – on the one hand the army, on the other, people are trying in vain attempts to survive at any cost. A picture of a terrible technological disaster in a big metropolis, where robots without control, people with implants become monsters, where the military is an extra obstacle in the way and a potential target.
